general knowledge

Terms from Artificial Intelligence: humans at the heart of algorithms

The technical meaning of 'general knowledge' is just what it says, the kinds of knowledge about the world that we all have: the sky is blue, apples fall down, people generally have two arms and two legs. This is contrasted with more specialised knowledge about a specifi topic (such as quantum mechanics, or 15th Century Kings of France) or a specific situation (such as the locations of furniture in your home). Until recently it has been very difficult for AI to deal with problems involving general knowledge, however, large language models trained on vast qunatities of human text are beginning the change this as are systems such as IBM Watson whihc use a combination of rule-based approaches, pre-processed data and real time access to large data sources.
